Americans are keeping their cars and are now becoming serious about maintenance. For the shop owner, we can see tremendous opportunity to step up the selling points of good maintenance. Keep in mind that issues like premature tire wear have a lot to do with failing suspension bushing and ball joints. Not to mention road handling. Replacement of these components is important in older cars. We've got the tools to make it quick and easy. Be careful not to price jobs too high. Times are tough for these customers. The good old days are gone for a little while but we're all still here and need to keep working. We've had an upsurge of "Do It Yourself" repair inquiries for tools to do jobs that should be performed by professionals only. It's sometimes frightening the jobs they choose to tackle. You can just see the tow truck pulling up to your shop with all the parts in the trunk. Get creative with your payment terms and think of what "Added Value"you can bring to your customers. Small giveaways, free oil changes with next visit,etc. You know the drill. Let's keep everyone working. Don't wait for the customers. BE PROACTIVE. Maybe send a quick inexpensive post card out to your customers to remind them their car needs service

~Why don't we sell direct on line or How we avoid returns. Techs need the right tool the first time they order. Ordering the wrong special tool online is the biggest problem for our side of the industry. All wheel bearings are not the same size and Special tool X does not work on all BMW's. It's just like parts. Everything's special. Our phone guys are all very knowledgeable and have factory resources at their fingertips. We subscribe to all of the OEM information. We are not going to be the reason you have to call your customer to tell him his job is getting pushed back a few days. Let the parts guys cause that.
~ Why don't we list prices? We are most interested in what you are working on and having problems with. We want to be part of the solution so we need to know as much as we can about what you guys are having trouble with. We also need to get the right tool to you. Talking with techs helps us stay ahead of chronic problems in vehicles and better equip us to help find the right solutions.
