More and more Americans today are buyin forgein cars over domestic. That means more and more Americans are looking for mechanics that specialize in their particular makes and models.

As a mechanic, you probably have a wide range of knowledge of the different cars out there.

Unfortunately, you need a bit more than just knowledge to garner repeat customers. That means you need to have the right diagnostic and specialty tools to get the job done, especially if you’re trying to attract more Audi drivers and other foreign car drivers.

To learn more about the importance of Audi specialty tools and which ones you need, keep reading.

Why Your Specialty Tools Matter

There used to be a time when automechanic tools were a one-size-fits-all concept. Now, not only are there more cars on the road—but there are more foreign cars on the road. We probably don’t have to tell you that there’s a lot of competition among the many auto shops out there, and if you’re not certified to work on foreign cars, you’re already behind.

Aside from knowing how to diagnose and repair a foreign car, you also need to have the right tools. Today’s foreign car models are much different than they were decades ago, and each make comes with its own set of specialty tools and parts. Now, equipment for mechanics must be able to keep up with newer and more complex technology.

Think of it this way—what would a golf club do for Lebron James?—probably the same thing the wrong tools would do for a skilled mechanic.

That’s why you need to do your due dilligence and gather the right tools for your shop.

Your Audi Specialty Tool Checklist:

There’s a number of Audi specialty tools that are considered “standard” to the trade. For example there are ratchets, screwdrivers, and other hand tools that can be used on several different types of vehicles. The following list is what separates Audi work from other foreign vehicles.

Here’s what you need to get started:

Diagnostic Manuals

Every mechanic needs a reference point. That’s where an Audi diagnostic manual comes in handy. A diagnostic manual is a short cut to the issues that can go wrong with a specific make and model.

You can use your diagnostic manual as a reference to the computer codes, wiring, exhaust, engine compartments, ignition coils, the oil tank, throttle, and much more. All you have to do is pair it with a quality Audi diagnostic tool and there’s no problem you won’t be able to solve.

Fuel Injection Special Tools

German car manufacturers don’t have a universal fuel injector for their motors. Each manufacturer have their own set of special tools for

removing the fuel injector and replacing the fuel injector seal. This is very important on the high pressure gas direct injection, or GDI, systems.

Wheel Bearing Special Tools

Modern day wheel bearings are pressed in to place in the wheel hubs.

To replace these wheel bearings on the car special tools are needed to remove and install the wheel bearings.

Heavy-Duty Stud Removers

You’ll likely be doing a lot of tire rotations and break work on the Audis that come into your shop. Audi studs are tuff and have a unique shape. Therefore, you’re going to need some heavy-duty stud removers.

Using low quality stud removers can result in damaging the car’s studs or worse—stripping them.

Electrical System Special Tools

Electrical systems , including starter and alternators, need special tools to service them.

Alternators with free wheeling pulleys need special tools to service them to remove and installing the pulley

Timing Special Tools Kit

Audi switched from using timing belts to chains. Their timing chains are much tougher and durable as they’re meant to last for the life of the vehicle. However, that doesn’t mean that things won’t go wrong in other areas such as the distributer, cam shaft, or crank shaft.

To diagnose an Audi’s timing issues you’ll need the proper timing kit. It also has to be a timing kit that’s specific to the AUDI brand. Many foreign cars have made the switch to using timing chains, however, each type of vehicle is engineered differently, which means that no two timing chain assemblies will be the same.

Hose Clamp Pliers

Hose clamp pliers are an essential piece of equipment for mechanics. Get yourself a set that sports a dual cup grip, as they’re much stronger compared to other hose clamps that tend to be cable-driven.

Audi doesn’t have a specific hose clamp plier in terms of its brand, but we’re fans of Blue-Point.

Trim Removal Tools

The interior and plastic pieces in Audi cars are incredibly strong and difficult to get loose. Sometimes, it’s nearly impossible to get the trim loose without breaking it—and the last thing you want to do is damage an Audi driver’s car.

There are several different styles trim removal tools on the market. As long as you’ve got a quality one in your tool box and you’re not using a flat head screw driver, you’re all set.

Quality Tools Matter

There are plenty more diagnostic and specialty tools you’ll need if you want to successfully repair Audis and other foreign cars. Consider the above checklist your starting point, and remember, quality tools matter.
